PLACES OF INTEREST:
The Calle Calle and Valdivia
Rivers: Two beautiful river beds form the poetic "Camino de la Luna" ("Path
of the Monn") having the Teja Island and Costanera Avenue as its background
setting.
Costanera Avenue: Is a long
riverside walk or ride highlighted by the Calle Calle and Pedro de Valdivia
bridges, the residential area, the beautiful well kept gardens, and various types
of vessels and sailboats constantly sailing.
Schuster Dock and Riverside Market: The dock is the starting point for
tourism ships and motor boats which go on river daytrips throughout the area. The
riverside market is an attractive seafood and vegetable trade center.
Spanish Fortified Towers: Are living
testimony of the Spanish colonial period. They were built in the XVIII century to
defend and support the accessess to the city.
Universidad Austral de Valdivia (Austral University): Is located on Teja
Island. It's an important education and research center of international prestige
in the forest and farming areas. It has a beautiful public botanical garden and
arboretum with trees from all over the world displaying samples of around 1,000
exotic native species and different types of flowers.
Mauricio Van de Maele History and Anthropology Museum: Exhibits
range from the local Mapuche Indian Culture, the Spanish colonial period to the
German settlement including ancient pieces and maps of historical interest.
Saval Park: Is an atractive green area
located on Teja Island where you can see the most amazing Loto Lagoon with
beatiful November blooms, a "medialuna" for rodeos, a garden for horseback riding
and jumping, childrens' games, and a beautiful picnic area.
Guillermo Harnecker Public Park: Is located near Calle Calle
bridge and 4.5 hectares of native species. It has a tree nursery, an ecological
education area, childrens' games, picnic area and multi purpose courts and soccer
fields.
Niebla: Beach resort located 17 km
from Valdivia which can be reached both by road and water. Main attractions:
beautiful beaches surrounded by great natural beauty; a Spanish fortress from
1671; the Vergara Davila Municipal Park with its thick "Selva Valdiviana"
(Valdivian Jungle) with paths and childrens' games.
Mancera Island: An island located at the end of Corral Bay in the mouth
of the Valdivia River. Main attractions: San Pedro de Alcántara's Castle (1645)
and the remains of a baroque church (1777). There are many small beaches around
the island for safe bathing.
Corral - Amargos
- San Carlos: 17 km from Valdivia. Main attractions: the San Sebastián de
la Cruz Castle built in 1767; the Amargos fishing bay (2 km from Corral). In San
Carlos (6 km from Corral) open beaches and the San Carlos Fort built in 1762.

Valdivia is well known for
its German "delikatessen": chocolates, almond paste (marzipan), liquors and beer:
"Entrelagos" chocolate factory - "Sur" sweets factory - "Fehremberg" Liquors
- "Kunstmann" beer factory. It is also an important production and trade center
for local handicrafts, with many fairs and speciliazed businesses in the area.
The city is a great starting point for outings and
excursions to the Lakes District ("Región de los Lagos"), to the lakes which have
given the region its name, to important cities (Osorno, Frutillar, Puerto Varas,
Puerto Montt, Ancud, Castro), to the Archipelago of Chiloe with its landscape,
different culture and traditions.
